Nursing Students Hands-On Training

Nursing Students Hands-On Training

This practicum hands-on session is designed for first-year nursing students as part of their fundamental nursing course. It provides an opportunity for students to develop essential clinical skills in medication administration, specifically focusing on:

Subcutaneous (SC) Injection – Students learn the proper technique for administering medications into the subcutaneous tissue. This includes selecting appropriate injection sites, understanding needle gauge and length, aseptic techniques, and ensuring patient comfort. Common medications given subcutaneously include insulin and anticoagulants.

Intravenous (IV) Insertion – This training session equips students with the necessary skills to initiate IV therapy safely. They practice identifying suitable veins, preparing the insertion site, choosing the correct catheter size, and inserting the IV cannula while adhering to infection control protocols. Additionally, students learn how to secure the IV line, monitor for complications, and manage patient care during IV therapy.

Intramuscular (IM) Injection – Students are trained to administer medications into the muscle tissue, ensuring proper absorption and effectiveness. This includes site selection (e.g., deltoid, vastus lateralis, ventrogluteal), appropriate needle length, injection techniques to minimize pain and complications, and understanding the Z-track method for specific medications.

Throughout the session, students practice on simulation models and, where applicable, supervised peer-to-peer learning. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, infection control, proper documentation, and critical thinking in medication administration. This hands-on experience builds confidence and competence in performing these essential nursing procedures in real clinical settings.
