On Friday, October 11, 2024, the Mayo Clinic honored Professor Alexandre Nehme, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Saint George University of Beirut, with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing him as the best graduate worldwide for 2024. Dr. Nehme is celebrated as the first Lebanese and the youngest graduate to receive this honor, commended for his remarkable achievements as an "International Educational Leader through Disaster."
During the ceremony at the Mayo Clinic headquarters, Dr. Theresia Amori, the medical director for alumni, praised Dr. Nehme's pivotal role in establishing the Faculty of Medicine at Saint George University and ensuring the continuity of medical education following the devastating Beirut port explosion. Despite the immense challenges faced, Dr. Nehme successfully developed academic curricula, leading to the admission of the university's first cohort of medical students in October 2022.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Nehme shared mixed emotions, expressing both joy at the recognition and deep sadness over the situation in Lebanon. He highlighted the critical importance of education in rebuilding and strengthening the nation.
